While a unique aspect of the Designing to Live Sustainably competition is its assurance to entrants that their submission will be displayed in its celebration of designs, that celebration will also have awards recognizing excellence, chosen and presented by local and/or national and international organizations that deem a design as best exemplifying their mission.
Judging will be done by a multidisciplinary panel of judges who will select a winner from each of the 6 categories, and one grand prize winner. Details on prizes will be announced at a later date. We are pleased to announce our panel of expert judges:
Eddie Friel, OBE, DBA, FRSA, Director, Niagara Global Tourism Institute
Lynn Marinelli, WNY Director of Intergovernmental Relations, Empire State Development
Hal Morse, Executive Director, Greater Buffalo-Niagara Regional Transit Council; Committee Chair, One Region Forward
Rocco Termini, President & Chief Executive Officer, Signature Development
Lisa Tucker, Co-Founder & Executive Director, Food & Fork Network
Pat Whalen, Chief Operating Officer, Buffalo-Niagara Medical Campus, Inc.
We are also honored and excited to welcome David Hahn-Baker, Founder and President of Inside/Out Political Consultants, who will join us as the award selection facilitator.
Judges will take into consideration the following factors when reviewing the submissions:
- How the proposed design affects the region's larger scale environment
- Appreciation for thinking beyond the conventional paradigm
- Creativity and innovation
- Feasibility and viability
- Clarity of drawings, images, models and presentation of Submission
- How the design affects the chosen area and its surrounding neighborhoods
The judges will also consider economic, social, and ecological aspects, with feasibility, creativity and inter-disciplinary approaches earning high valuations. The best entries will allow for groups of different financial means to live and work in, to thrive together in the city. Many resources are available to help with research in our RESOURCES section.
